Dancers are very active beings.  We spend hours in the studio taking class, learning choreo and performing on stage.  That amount of activity can easily take a toll on the body, both physically and mentally.

The secret to keeping your energy up, muscles working and brain sharp? Hydration.  In this post, we are sharing exactly why hydration is the real MVP on and off the dance floor.

Water helps flush the body of toxins.  Water is important to keep your body healthy and functioning properly.  It removes waste and keeps your digestion in check.

Water helps build and repair muscles.  The wear and tear of a dancer’s body is unavoidable.  Keeping your body well-hydrated will help your muscles recover faster and prevent cramping.  Think of water as lubrication for the joints of the body.  It will keep you moving like a well-oiled machine!

Water boosts your immune system.   It’s that time of year when it seems like everyone is getting sick. Water is a great tool to prevent illness and stay on top of your health game.

Hydration replaces the water you use.  With massive amounts of activity comes massive amounts of sweat loss.  It’s important to replace the water you use. Our bodies are 50-60% water – so you can imagine it’s the key to keeping yourself in balance.

Water helps you curve cravings. Got a sweet tooth or can’t pass up on a savory snack?  Sometimes your cravings may be a result of poor hydration.  Sub a glass of water when you’re feeling a craving coming on to decipher between true hunger and lusting after that cupcake.

Got hydration? Try these tips for getting more H2O!

  1. Start your day with a glass of water.  This will get you ahead of your water game early on and set a good habit for the rest of your day.

  2. Track your water intake on an app.  There are plenty of phone apps in the App Store that track your water intake.  You can even compete with friends!

  3. Make sure you hydrate before, during and after class. Replace water loss – especially on days where you are extremely active.

  4. Recruit help from additional electrolytes.  Sometimes it’s impossible to play catch up, particularly at conventions and competitions when you’re dancing all day long.  A sports drink or Pedialyte may be a good choice to balance out your electrolytes and replenish.  Consult with a registered dietician or health care professional for recommendations.

Happy hydrating!
