With a brand-new year comes a host of brand-new musicals and musical revivals on Broadway.  Here are five dance-heavy shows that we can’t wait to see on the Great White Way this season.

KISS ME, KATE will play a limited run through Roundabout Theatre Company—so don’t miss your chance to see this classic show.  The revival production will be choreographed by Warren Carlisle (HELLO DOLLY!, AFTER MIDNIGHT). Do your research about this musical by watching the film (featuring Ann Miller, Bob Fosse, and Carol Haney).

Sergio Trujillo will take on another jukebox musical, AIN’T TOO PROUD—THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE TEMPTATIONS.  Trujillo previously choreographed shows including JERSEY BOYS, ON YOUR FEET!, and SUMMER.  Jukebox musicals are all the rage because audiences get to learn about bands and artists, but they also love to sing along with their favorite songs!  You might want to brush up on your Temptations music like “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” and “Papa was a Rolling Stone” before this musical comes out in a few months.

Newbie Broadway choreographer, Connor Gallagher takes on the cult classic, BEETLEJUICE, set to open on Broadway this March.  The kooky, spooky cartoon-inspired show might be for a targeted audience, but reviews note that Gallagher’s choreography (especially in the “Day-O” dinner scene) steal the show.

Denis Jones is the choreographer for his third musical on Broadway, TOOTSIE (based on the movie by the same name).  Jones lightheartedly—and successfully—spoofs familiar tropes of Broadway choreography.  A musical comedy with witty yet technical dancing?  We’re in!

Two words…MOULIN ROUGE.  Our favorite music-driven movie will take the stage this summer.  With spectacular sets and choreography by SYTYCD’s Sonja Tayeh, the show received rave reviews during their out-of-town run in Boston last year.  We’re excited to see Tayeh’s choreo on the Broadway stage.  And with a huge 25-person ensemble, we’ve no doubt the dancing will be nothing short of extraordinary.

All the musicals we listed are either inspired by movies or are revivals of earlier productions.  This is a common trend on Broadway since producers know that audiences already love or are at least familiar with the story.  Brainstorm a musical (or revival) that you’d like to see come to Broadway soon.  Share it with us in the comments section below!
