Whether we can believe it or not, competition season is upon us again! This time of year can be exciting, stressful, emotional, and everything in between. Let’s discuss some ways to best prepare yourself for the season ahead.
Take down time
As much as you can, whenever you can, try to rest and recover. Sometimes we have multiple competition weekends in a row, which can be overwhelming on us both physically and mentally. Take any opportunity you can during those weeks in between to get good sleep, eat nutritious foods, and take care of your body. Hot baths, massages, cupping and even cryo-therapy are wonderful ways to recoup after or before a big competition weekend. You deserve it! Your body will thank you.
Make a list, check it twice
Create a list of all the things you’ll need to pack and what you’ll want to bring to keep you comfortable. Consider packing before the day of competition so that you can feel more relaxed knowing you have everything you need together, like costuming, warm ups, snacks, essential oils, headphones, etc.
Focus on yourself, not on your competition
Of course you’re curious to know who you’re up against, but try to stay in your lane, with your focus directed to your performance and your experience. You are only in control of your performance, and the rest is letting the standings fall where they may. Getting too caught up in your competition and what they’re doing only detracts from the energy and focus you need to dance your very best.
Be open to critiques
Maybe your teacher tells you the same thing over and over again. Are you articulating through your feet? Keeping your hips squared in leg extensions? Do you always pop your leap on one when it should be on two? Be open and aware of the feed back you’re getting from your teachers prior to competition. Chances are that the judges are going to comment on some of the same things- and then that’s just embarrassing. Fix it and wow them both!
Just Dance
Lady Gaga said it best. Remember that while competition is important, learning, growing and having fun are the things that really matter in life. Work hard, keep a good attitude and slay the floor like the incredible dancer you are. “It’ll be okay, just dance!”
