There comes a time in every dancer’s life where they have to make an important decision about the role of dance post-high school.  Is it a career path? Are you going to go pro? Are you going to study for a career in the field? Are you going to go to college, period? While this is a very challenging decision to make, it’s important to know all of your options.  There is not right or wrong choice, and your answer truly depends on your goals and what you want.  After all, everyone’s journey is different.

If you choose to go to college, there are a few options for you to consider.

  1. BFA / BA in Dance Performance

If you decide performing is your jam and you wish to become a professional dancer, this is a great route for you to take.  You will train extensively in a variety of techniques, depending on the program.  You also should expect to take classes in anatomy, dance history, choreography and other general education curriculum to complete the coursework.  Make a list of potential colleges and universities – definitely keep an eye out for auditions, too!  Most program require auditioning before entry.

  1. Dance Teams + Clubs

If a dance career isn’t in your future, that’s more than okay.  Most schools have dance teams and clubs as an extra curricular.  This is also a great way to meet new friends with similar interests.  You’ll be able to perform and still get the classic college experience. Some dance teams even compete on a national level.

3.) Dance-Related Majors

If you are looking to stay in the dance industry, you may consider a career in Arts Administration, Dance Therapy or even Business if you are interested in owning your own studio.  Dancers are highly organized, creative, hard working and disciplined.   These career paths are perfect for the career-oriented artist.

4.) General Education / Phys Ed Credits

Many schools with dance majors will also have dance classes that are general education or gym credits.  Even if your major is outside of the arts, you may be able to add these credits to your schedule to keep your feet wet in the studio.
