Dance auditions can be nerve racking in so many ways. You're thinking about what you can do and how to bring your best, while hoping that you're what the judges are looking for and sizing yourself up against the competition. The days can be long and the waiting can be overwhelming. But we got you! Here are some ways to help boost your confidence, so you can put your best foot (and self!) forward at auditions.
1. Arrive Prepared
Arriving prepared is the first step you can take to feel secure and ready for your audition. Read about what to expect on the company's website and talk with dancers who have done the audition before to get a good idea of what goes on at the audition. Make sure that you bring all relevant paperwork, and have your resume or headshot on hand. Come with your hair and makeup done in a style that is appropriate for your audition. Wear something that you feel confident in and that is flattering on your body.
The more prepared and ready you are before you arrive, the more relaxed and composed you will feel once you get there.
2. Arrive Early
There is nothing more stressful than running late, so plan on arriving early to your audition to eliminate any additional factors. You'll have more time to check in, get a solid warm up going, and to chill before you dance.
3. Stand in the front
Depending on the space and how many dancers there are, this could be tricky. But, it's always a good idea to stand in the front, especially if you are nervous. We usually head for the back when we're not confident, but the dancers in the front have the best access to learning the material and have a greater chance of catching a judges eye from the get-go.
4. Ask Questions
If there is an opportunity to ask questions and engage with the choreographer about the routine, seize it! Putting yourself out there builds confidence and it also shows the choreographer you're interested. Plus, you may be helping to clarify things for other dancers who are wondering the same thing.
5. Pack food, snacks, entertainment
There can often be a lot of down time at dance auditions, so pack your bag accordingly. Pack things that make you feel comfortable and enhance your energy. Bring healthy snacks (protein bars, fruits and veggies) and a jug of water to stay hydrated. Consider bringing a book, a game, a coloring book, or something to keep you engaged while you're waiting or hanging out in between cuts.
6. Breathe
Dance auditions can be stressful for even the most experienced and professional dancer. A technique that you can take with you in any given stressful situation is to ground and breathe. Close your eyes for a minute or more and breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Imagine your breath traveling through your body and relaxing your muscles. You will feel much more calm and focused, and ready to take on your audition with confidence.
